Male Fertility and Reproductive Health

You don’t really think about the health of your sperm until it comes time to start a family.

Infertility affects both men and women, but whether the cause is a single physical factor or multiple sources, fertility issues are stressful for couples wanting to start a family.

Men’s Infertility comes in many forms and has several causes. Some cases of male infertility are due to anatomical abnormalities such as varicoceles and ductal obstructions. In such instances, western treatment is the better alternative for treatment.

The most common causes include lifestyle factors, problems with sperm production, movement or shape, sperm antibodies, chromsome and DNA abnormalities, hormonal problems or erectile and ejcaulation difficulties. Fortunately most causes are readily diagnosed and most can be treated or overcome to help a couple conceive.

Our Chinese medicine doctors are experienced in offering complementary solutions that work hand-in-hand with your doctor’s advice. We can help you address infertility issues including:

  • Male infertility
  • Sperm count, motility, morphology issues
  • Impotence/erectile dysfunction
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Prostrate conditions
  • Low libido
  • Hormone dysfunction
  • Genito-urinary infections and STDs

We can improve the factors that potentially affect your fertility

  • Anxiety and depression
  • General fatigue
  • Stress
  • Other disorders affecting fertility including diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

A few simple changes to your diet and lifestyle could help improve your overall health and fertility:

  • Stop smoking
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Stop recreational drugs and anabolic steroids (taken for body-building or sporting purposes)
  • Have frequent sex (or at least frequent ejaculation)
  • Have a healthy, balanced diet
  • Avoid sexually transmitted diseases
  • Avoid heat stress from tight-fitting underwear

There are a number of ways that we can address male infertility to help achieve a successful pregnancy with their partner. Several credible studies have shown that regular acupuncture treatment can have an positive impact on semen quality. Chinese herbs are very helpful in improving all aspects of sperm quality.

We provide acupuncture treatment and prescribe our herbs in individual formulas tailored to your specific needs. For those intended to undergo IVF, it is a good idea to optimise your chances by having the healthiest sperm possible.

Suggested Schedule:

1-2 treatments per week for 3 months. This is because it takes about 3 months for sperms to get mature.

For IVF support, we recommend once or twice weekly acupuncture treatments for at least 4-6 weeks prior to starting IVF cycle, and twice weekly acupuncture treatments prior to sperm donation and one treatment before sperm donation within 24 hours to reduce anxiety and increase blood flow to the genital area.
